The three tiers, honestly compared
Water bungalows
Stilted chalets standing directly over the lagoon — the postcard Mabul stay. You pay for the location and the deck, and it is worth it if waking up over turquoise water is the point of the trip.
Dive & stay packages
Room, boat dives, meals and transfers in one booking. The simplest way to run a dive trip, and the route most Sipadan hopefuls take because permit day-trips are arranged through the same operator.
Budget rooms & homestays
Simple rooms in and around the stilt village. Fewer frills, cold showers in some, the same ocean — and the most island life per ringgit. Popular with long-stay divers, and honestly the most sociable end of the island.
How to choose
- Diving is the mission: package first, room second — dive logistics matter more than thread count.
- Honeymoon or milestone trip: water bungalow, and book early — they sell out first in high season.
- Travelling long or on a budget: homestay tier, and put the savings into extra dives.
- Non-diver in the group? Read the non-divers guide before choosing — some stays suit mixed groups far better than others.
