The dive
On the southwestern fringe of the Mabul reef, averaging around 15 metres with a maximum near 25: a sandy plateau at about 22 metres gradually descending toward open sea. Conditions are typically calm; boats drop you on the site in minutes.
Residents
The colonies are the show — garden eels by the hundred, best observed by settling low and still and letting them forget you. Around them: blue-ribbon eels, giant morays, mantis shrimp, gobies on the sand, frogfish on the scattered structure, and the occasional flamboyant cuttlefish on patrol. A strong night-dive venue as well.
Conditions and level
- Depth: avg ~15 m, max ~25 m — the deep end of Mabul's rotation
- Technique note: stay off the bottom and upstream of your own fins; stirred silt empties the eel field faster than any predator
- Suits: Open Water and up; the depth rewards good air management
