Step 1 — Fly to Tawau (TWU)
Tawau Airport is the gateway. Direct flights arrive from Kuala Lumpur (about 2 hours 50 minutes), Kota Kinabalu (about 45 minutes) and Sandakan, operated mainly by Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and Firefly.
The one rule that matters: land by 2.00pm. Later arrivals miss the last boat of the day and mean an overnight in Semporna.
Step 2 — Tawau to Semporna by road
Semporna is the mainland gateway town, roughly 1 hour 20 minutes to 2 hours by road from the airport. Most dive-and-stay packages include this transfer with a driver waiting at arrivals; otherwise taxis and pre-arranged transfers are available at the airport.
Step 3 — Semporna to Mabul by boat
Scheduled resort boats leave from the jetty near the town centre. The crossing takes 35 to 45 minutes depending on weather.
| Departure | Direction |
|---|---|
| 9.30am | Semporna → Mabul |
| 1.30pm | Semporna → Mabul |
| 4.30pm | Semporna → Mabul |
Boat departure times above are the typical published schedule — confirm current times and return-leg times against the operator schedule before this page goes live, and date-stamp it.
Putting it together
- Book a flight into Tawau arriving before 2.00pm.
- Arrange the Tawau–Semporna land transfer (usually bundled with your stay).
- Board the afternoon boat; most travellers are on Mabul in time for a late lunch.
Travelling with dive gear or a camera rig? Boats handle standard luggage fine, but flag oversized cases when booking so space is reserved.

Doing it as a day trip instead?
You can visit Mabul without staying overnight — day trips run from Semporna. See the day trips guide for how that works and what you trade off.
