What a Mabul trip costs

The five blocks

1. Flights to Tawau — usually the biggest single item for West Malaysians and internationals; booked early it shrinks meaningfully.

3. Diving — priced per boat dive outside packages; house-reef access terms change the maths for keen divers.
4. The Sipadan permit day — a distinct add-on with its own cost and scarcity; budget it separately if it is on the list.
5. Transfers and the small stuff — Tawau–Semporna–boat legs (often bundled), plus cash spending on the island, where card facilities should not be assumed.

What moves the total

• Season: holiday windows lift room rates and empty availability first — the timing guide matters to the budget as much as the weather.
• Tier: the honest budget question is the accommodation one; diving costs vary far less than beds do.
• Length: per-day costs fall on longer stays as fixed transfer costs spread — one reason the 4D3N outvalues the 3D2N.

Budget honestly

The trap is booking the flight cheap and discovering the bed dear. Fix the accommodation tier first, then the flights, then the extras — and if the numbers pinch, the budget tier plus a Semporna-based day-trip hybrid is the established money-saver's route.
