What Semporna is for
Three jobs: the jetty where the island boats leave, the overnight stop when flights miss the 2.00pm rule, and the errand run — cash, SIM cards, last-minute supplies — before the island, where none of those things are reliably available. The getting-there guide covers the boat schedule; this page covers the hours around it.
If you overnight
Accommodation in town spans simple lodges to mid-range hotels at prices well below island rates — which is exactly why the Semporna-base day-trip strategy exists for budget travellers. Book the night in advance during holiday periods; the town fills with island-bound traffic.
The errand list
- Cash — withdraw here. Card facilities and cash access on the island are limited to nonexistent.
- SIM / data — pick up or top up a Malaysian SIM in town; island signal exists but do not bank on buying connectivity there.
- Pharmacy basics — seasickness tablets, insect repellent, anything from the packing list you forgot.
Eating
The town's genuine attraction: seafood, straight off the boats that supply half the region. An evening at the waterfront grill stalls is the correct way to spend a forced overnight.
Confirm current on-island cash/card reality and mobile coverage claims with the operator before publishing — these change and this page's value is being right about them.
