What you are actually booking
Water bungalows on Mabul stand on stilts over the shallow lagoon on the reef flat. Expect a private deck over the water, sea views from bed, and snorkelling access more or less from your doorstep. Turtles grazing between the stilts are a routine sighting, not a lucky one.

What the postcard leaves out
Honesty tier: this is still a small island village, not the Maldives. Generators run, the village is close, and weather can make the lagoon murky for a day or two after storms. None of that ruins the stay — but arriving with accurate expectations is the difference between delighted and disappointed.
Booking timing
Bungalow inventory on the island is limited and sells out first, especially around high season and public holidays. If your dates are fixed, confirm the room before the flights.
